9. Caroline Bay 1941 parliament tribute stone

Parliament Stone from War

Location: Caroline Bay, beside the railway underpass. The air raid shelters were at each end of Caroline Bay

Access: Public area, specific shelter remains may not be visible
Associated years: Second World War; 1941 to 1944
Associated people/groups: Timaru community, British Houses of Parliament, wartime London, local commemorators, Timaru Borough Council, Emergency Precautions Service, local civilians, children and families

Timaru was emotionally and politically connected to Britain during the war. Bombing raids on Britain, including London, were followed closely in New Zealand. A damaged brick from Parliament brought that overseas destruction into a local public place. It is a small object, but it makes the war physical. A brick damaged in Britain becomes part of Timaru’s landscape.

The Station Street air raid shelter heritage report records that by 20 December 1941, shelters had been built at Station Street, Perth Street, each end of Caroline Bay and other sites around Timaru. At least 34 shelters appear to have been built in the town, including at schools.

This stop is best paired with the memorial wall. Caroline Bay remembered the First World War as a place overseas, but during the Second World War it also became part of home-front preparation. The same public recreation area that held memorial plaques also held civil-defence anxiety.

Find a WuHoo: Find the plaque and ask why a piece of bomb-damaged London was placed at Caroline Bay. Stand at the Bay and ask how it changes the place if you imagine sirens, shelters and children being trained to respond to attack.

Embedded in the wall above the plaque is a brick from English Parliament buildings containing a bullet hole from an German aerial attack.

Dated poss 1916. "Looking south along Caroline Bay, Timaru. Showing (above bay, centre) the Dominion Hotel - Stafford Street North (John Reilly, proprietor), to the right of this is the gabled Hydro Grand Hotel; Lollie and fruit stall; cannon; telephone booth; and band rotunda with clock."
Spotted this on the old South Island page -- what caught my eye was the gun. Identified by a former Timaru resident and one-time member of C Battery as a 24-pounder, one of two sent by the Admiralty from the Crimean War to the Defence Dept here, (NZ Herald, 2 January 1942, p. 6), there's not a lot of info on it or its companion on the beach in the recent book "Great Guns, the Artillery Heritage of New Zealand". Seems that the guns arrived in Timaru in 1908.
"Members of the [Caroline Bay Beautifying] Association's committee ... considered some other matters. It was decided that the best places for two oid cannons, presented to the Council by the Defence Department, would be on two slight projections from the middle terrace, overlooking the lawn ..." (Timaru Herald, 14 August 1908, p 5)
Before the end of 1941, the two guns were scrapped for the war effort.
"Once used in the Crimean War against Russia more than 80 years ago, two British naval guns are now being melted down in a Christchurch foundry to provide munitions for use in a war in which Britain and Russia are allies. The guns were part of a load of scrap metal collected in Timaru, and had been on the beach at Caroline Bay for many years. One gun was made in 1842 and the other in 1853. Experts at the foundry where the guns are being melted down say that they are the work of master craftsmen. The total weight is 25cwt, and the scrap metal in the guns is worth approximately £76. The gunis are said to have been sent to the Dominion after the Crimean war, and were placed in position on a piece of defence property on Patiti Point. Later they were transferred to the beach at Caroline Bay, Timaru." (Auckland Star, 29 December 1941, p. 3)

The RSA's 25 pounder gun's restoration got underway in 2018. The 25-pounder gun which had sat at the front of the South Canterbury RSA in Wai-iti Rd since 1967. Following World War II there had been a surplus of machinery. The New Zealand Defence Force donated guns to RSAs throughout the country. The gun arrived in Timaru on July 19 1967.
