27. Mountainview High School Roll of Honour and “The Four Freedoms of Man”

Location: Mountainview High School, Timaru
Access: School interior, by permission
Associated years: First World War, Second World War, later school memorial context to confirm
Associated people: former pupils, A. G. Manson, Mountainview High School community

Visit Mountainview High School, with permission, to see two linked forms of remembrance. Local records identify a roll of honour in the office area, remembering former pupils who served and gave their lives during the First and Second World Wars. They also identify a wooden carving, The Four Freedoms of Man, designed and carved by A. G. Manson.

This site is useful because it connects names with values. “The Four Freedoms” refers to freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. These ideas were made famous by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941 and became part of Allied wartime and post-war ideals.

Here the tour can ask not only who served, but what people believed they were defending.

Find a WuHoo: the roll of honour, the carving, and any wording that explains when and why they were placed in the school.
