Dorothy Dawn Jamieson, known as Dawn, was born in about 1938 or 1939. She married into the Gresham family and lived in the Geraldine district. She died at Waihi Lodge, Geraldine, on 27 February 2025, aged 86.
Dawn was closely associated with equestrian activity in South Canterbury. Published results from South Canterbury North Otago dressage competitions record her serving as an arena judge in 2009 and 2013. She also appeared on the Royal Agricultural Society’s approved judges list as recently as 2024 in connection with donkey and mule judging.
Judges make organised equestrian sport possible. They must understand rules, movement, presentation, safety and the standards expected at each level. Their decisions affect placings, but their wider contribution is consistency. Riders need to know that performances will be assessed by people with relevant knowledge and experience.
Dawn’s recorded service across different years suggests a sustained contribution rather than a single appearance. However, the present public evidence does not yet establish when she began judging, which qualifications she held or the full range of clubs and events she supported.
Tributes written after her death remember her encouragement of riders and involvement with Pony Club. Those recollections are useful leads but should be confirmed through club records or interviews before being included as settled fact.
Her contribution represents a form of work that is easy to overlook. Sporting histories frequently record winning riders and horses while leaving the judges, organisers, stewards and instructors unnamed. Without that supporting knowledge, competitions do not run.
Impact: Dawn Gresham contributed the experienced judging and voluntary knowledge that allowed South Canterbury equestrian competitors to be assessed fairly and consistently. Her work supported riders, organisers and the continuity of regional equestrian sport.
