The sea used to reach beneath the cliffs at the Bay Hill, until the sandy Caroline Bay started forming 1890s. Before underground sewerage, night carts collected human waste, known as “night soil”. Some was dumped from the cliffs into the sea. The Benvenue was wrecked on 14 May 1882. The 1862 Alexandra lifeboat crew rushed to the rescue. It could be transported on its wheeled carriage by horses or manpower. A memorial to the disaster was erected at Sophia and Perth Streets. Timaru’s Central Business District (CBD) was also a parade route, with horses, carts, carriages, bands, motor vehicles and large crowds filling the streets for events, ceremonies and celebrations.
