1876 The brick Old Bank Hotel opened here, replacing an earlier tavern on the site. BNZ had opened its first Timaru agency here in 1862, before building a wooden bank on the corner of Stafford and George Streets in 1863 which was destroyed in the ‘Great 1868' fire. The Old Bank Hotel became part of Timaru’s racing world in 1887, when its licensee employed a barman at the Timaru races. In 2003 the Old Bank Café & Bar sponsored a 1200m race at Phar Lap Raceway.

The Maclean & Stewart’s Horse Bazaar was built in bluestone in 1878–79. Here draught, hunting and racing horses were bought and sold. In 1908 the building became a motor garage.
